Overview of the Development of Metal Powder Injection Molding
2022-01-14
Metal powder injection molding boasts unique chemical compositions as well as mechanical and physical properties that cannot be achieved through conventional casting methods. By employing powder metallurgy techniques, it is possible to directly produce porous, semi-dense, or fully dense materials and components—such as oil-bearing bearings, gears, cams, guide rods, and cutting tools—making it a near-net-shape manufacturing process with minimal or no machining required.
Medical components play a significant role in metal powder injection molding, and they account for a very large share of the total sales volume of metal powder injection-molded parts.
At the same time, metal powder injection molding is also widely used in the production and research of components and parts for industries such as the automotive sector, equipment manufacturing, the metals industry, aerospace, military industry, instrumentation, hardware tools, and consumer electronics. It is applied to the production of related raw materials and auxiliary materials, as well as to the manufacture of various powder preparation and sintering equipment. Products include bearings, gears, cemented carbide cutting tools, molds, friction products, and more. In the defense industry, heavy-duty weapons and equipment—such as armor-piercing projectiles, torpedoes, and brake assemblies for aircraft and tanks—rely on powder metallurgy technology for their production. In recent years, powder metallurgy automotive parts have become the largest market for China’s powder metallurgy industry, with approximately 50% of automotive components now being made using powder metallurgy techniques.
